When I was working on my first book, Dog Training for Kids, I borrowed some of the neighborhood kids and some of my clients' dogs to model for the training pictures. Sure enough, before the photographer had even sent the contact sheets, parents were calling to find out where they could buy copies for themselves and all their relatives. Books take time, a year or more to write, a year or more for editing, copyediting, production, cover design, and if you're a very lucky author, a marketing plan.
Yesterday the cover of my next book arrived by e-mail and the timing is perfect, not because the book will be available any minute - the pub date is not until next Fall - but because the story takes place in relentless snow, snow as fine and small as grains of salt, snow as big and wet as bedsheets just pulled from the washing machine, snow that comes and comes and comes and seems as if it will never end. So - timely because winter is upon us and soon my world - and maybe yours - will match the cover of my next book.
